University Square public space, bucharest
The redesign of University Square is based on a continuous paved surface that unifies the public space while defining areas with different patterns of movement and use. Light grey basalt paving changes its orientation and arrangement across the square: an orthogonal pattern structures the perimeter and pedestrian routes, while a more irregular layout in the central area reflects the multiple directions of movement and possible activities.
At the centre of the square, an open space accommodates public events and performances and establishes a direct relationship with the existing monumental statues. On the opposite side, a planted artificial slope defines the edge of the plaza while also functioning as informal seating and a natural auditorium overlooking the central space.
