Performing arts center, madrid
Located along the southern edge of Retiro Park in Madrid, the Performing Arts Center addresses the significant difference in elevation between the surrounding streets and the park. The project introduces new pedestrian connections between the city and the landscape, transforming the building and its surroundings into a sequence of routes leading into the park.
The design is developed around the concept of “growing architecture”, imagining the building as an extension of the landscape that expands between the existing trees. Interior and exterior spaces are conceived as part of a continuous environment, allowing architecture, vegetation and public space to become closely intertwined.
The glazed façade incorporates a system of external tubes whose configuration responds to solar orientation, providing shading during the warmer months while contributing to the building’s natural ventilation. At night, the same elements become integrated sources of light, transforming the environmental system into part of the building’s architectural expression.
